Why don’t you take insurance?
A cash-based physical therapy model is one where a therapist charges for their services without having to charge insurance or health providers extra, so the consumer pays a set agreed upon rate. This setup enables therapists to find cost effective ways of operating a business and to provide more affordable rates for their clients. It can also eliminate paying the corresponding healthcare costs up front when receiving treatment—as with some other models that require providers to submit bills.
The Benefits of a Cash-Based Physical Therapy Model
Physical therapy is generally covered by insurance, however there is limited reimbursement, and many restrictions on how we provide care. With a cash based physical therapy model the clinician can set a lower frequency of visits, and provide a generous treatment, aftercare and on call services for a reasonable rate.
Insurance coverage for physical therapy generally varies from state to state, it is always good to check your insurance before starting a course of physical therapy. Often there are a limited number a visits in which your plan will reimburse, 30 – 50 visits a year is common.
Insurance providers often hire outside firms to manage use of these visits. They require clinicians to submit frequent requests to extend care with extensive justification for services. This leaves the patient constantly questioning whether services will indeed be covered, and nervous about unexpected bills in the mail. In my years practicing under a health insurance model, it has become harder and harder to get my patients the care they deserve all because health insurance companies want to make money.
Freedom To Choose
A cash-based physical therapist allows patients more freedom when deciding which treatments they would like to pursue. The costs are upfront and clear. Packages are available to lower costs for people who would like to be seen regularly.
A cash-based physical therapy model is one where a therapist charges for their service, so the consumer pays in full. There are no mark ups, or additional out of pocket fees for the client beyond the fee per visit. Frequency of visits tend to average 4 x monthly, as opposed to the more common 3 x weekly you would receive in a clinic. One hour visits, and very thorough instruction, under this model, you are in control of your recovery.
